Cavalletti

Cavaletti are poles placed along the course of the horse at a height of about 20 centimeters and separated from each other by about 1.40 meters. When the horse under the rider is forced to walk or trot through the cavaletti, then achieve:

1) that the horse carefully follows the ground, and encourage it to higher foot movements. If the rider does not interfere with it, it usually stretches its neck forward and down and relaxes the muscles of the back.

If the requirements are too high, especially when working with hot horses or horses with weak backs, or if the cavaletti is placed in such a way that the horse bumps them, pushes them off, and the next one steps on them, the result will be more harm than good.

2) to make the rider feel relaxed and able to adapt to the rhythm of the horse’s movement. And in order not to fall behind the rhythm of its movement and not to disturb the mouth and back of the horse, the rider should try to get into the rhythm of its movement by closing his knees.

Working on cavaletti benefits horses with a short, wide back, making them relax, as well as bad-riding horses with stiff backs and stepping out of step. And yet working for Cavalletti is highly overrated. The horse, walking through them, of course, stretches its neck forward and down, but the rider does not in any way learn to achieve this movement by sending a message, any more than he would have learned to do it if the neck extension was stimulated by holding a bag to the head.
